1.1  CONCEPT OF SYSTEM

A  system is an integration of entities, alternatively defined as components, which have interction amongst them. For example, consider a particular department in a college/ university. The entities of the department are students, faculty, non-teaching staff, classrooms, computer centre, furniture, teaching aids, etc. Definitely these entities interact with one another for the functioning of the department. Both people and procedures are still very important components of a system even though many activities formerly performed by people are instead done by hardware when a system is computerized. Thus any information system integrates four components---People, Procedures, Data and Computer

These inputs are faculty, infrastructure(e.g. classrooms, teaching aids), and students. The outputs are students who graduate frm the department, research publications, consultancy projects of the department, employment of students, and so forth. These are schematically
The performance of the system is affected by certain environmental factors such as,
physical boundary of the department, various other departments in the same campus, U.G.C. rules and regulations, Government policies and procedures on education, employment market, etc.
